When a Buderim customer called us in a panic after raw sewage began overflowing inside their downstairs area, we knew it was an urgent situation. Within the hour, Blocked Busters were on-site to assess and fix the problem.
At first, the customer thought it might be an issue with their septic tank. However, after carrying out a thorough inspection, we discovered the real problem: two severe blockages in the main sewer line caused by solidified grease build-up.
What Caused the Blockage?
The grease had collected in “bellies” (sagging sections) of the sewer line. These areas create natural traps where grease cools, hardens, and slowly builds up over time until the drain is completely blocked. This is a common problem we see in households where fats, oils, and grease are regularly washed down the sink.
How We Fixed It
To restore proper flow, we used our high-pressure water jetter to clear out the grease blockages. Once the line was clean, we followed up with a CCTV camera inspection to ensure the sewer was fully clear and to check for any long-term issues.
After the blockage was cleared, we also made sure to address the sewage and grease spillage around the jetting area. To keep the site safe and hygienic, we applied hydrated lime, which neutralises bacteria and helps control odours. This is an important step we always take to leave the area sanitary for our customers.
We also discussed preventative measures with the homeowner to help reduce the risk of future blockages. Because of the overflow damage inside, this particular job will be handled as an insurance repair, but the good news is that the customer was able to use their toilets, sinks, and plumbing straight away after our visit.
Don’t Let Grease Ruin Your Plumbing
Grease blockages are one of the most common causes of sewer problems we deal with. Avoid pouring fats, oils, and grease down your sink — instead, let them cool and dispose of them in the rubbish. Regular drain maintenance can also help prevent costly repairs.
If you’re dealing with slow drains, bad smells, or worse — sewage backing up — don’t wait until it becomes an emergency. Call the blocked drain specialists at Blocked Busters. We’ll be there fast to get your plumbing flowing again.
